Thursday Movie Picks: Gangster

Hello readers! It's been a long time since I'm working on TMP. I've been busy and just not in the mood for writing but I know you do not come here to listen to my life story. Thursday Movie Picks is hosted by Wandering through the Shelves. For further details you can check here.

Without further a do, here are the movies I picked for this week's theme, Gangster.

Bonnie and Clyde (dir. Arthur Penn, 1967)

Bonnie Parker (Faye Dunaway) caught Clyde Barrow (Warren Beaty) trying to steal his mother's car. But charmed by him, she followed Clyde's world of robbing from small shops to bank. 

This is actually a romantic film that masqueraded itself as a gangster film. The focus of this story is how Bonnie and Clyde handled being chased by the police and the turbulence in their relationship. Bonnie and Clyde is a lovely film that is elevated by its two leads and their chemistry.

A Brighter Summer Day (dir. Edward Yang, 1991)

Xiao Si'r (Chang Chen) was forced to go to a school full of delinquents as his grades weren't enough to go to a better school. Later, he was caught between the feud of two gangs, Little Park Boys, children of civil servants, and 217s, children of military officers. His life was more complicated when Ming (Lisa Yang), the girlfriend of one of the leaders, came to his life.

A Brighter Summer Day is an exquisite realist film. Edward Yang built his protagonist's world carefully to lead us into a tragic climax. 

A Bittersweet Life (dir. Kim Jee Woon, 2005)

Kim Sun-woo (Lee Byung-hun) was assigned to keep an eye for his boss' girlfriend, Hee-soo (Shin Min-ah). He developed feelings for her, and decided to disobey his boss by sparing Hee-soo's life and a man she secretly dated behind Sun-woo's boss. His choice triggered a series of violence events for him.

A bittersweet life is filled with bittersweet music and stunning cinematography. Lee Byung-hun also gave an emotional performance and captured his character perfectly. There is this fluidity I can't explain that didn't make this film rigid.  

Bonus: Sunny (dir. Kang Hyung Chul, 2011)

Nami accidentally met an old high school friend, Chunhwa, in a hospital. They re-connected quickly. As Chunhwa's days numbered, she asked Nami to gather their old gang, Sunny. As she reminisced her past, she was taken back to her high school days in the middle of a political era in South Korea.

I was initially going to pick this over Bonnie and Clyde, but I fear that it will not fit the Gangster genre, lol. Although technically, if the definition of gangster is a group of people who do illegal things, this is a gangster movie. Sunny is (mostly) a feel good film that can make you cry, laugh, and looking back at your own teenage years.

Walaupun GWCD adalah film Katharine Hepburn yang pertama kali gue tonton, bukan film ini yang membuat gue jadi penggemar Hepburn.   

I know it's a bit out of topic, but I want to write a little bit of my thoughts about New Hollywood and Golden Hollywood.  Gue bukan penggemar Golden Hollywood, sama sekali.  Gue gak ngerti kenapa itu disebut era yang golden atau classical.  Menurut gue pribadi, film-filmnya terlalu dramatik, boring dan klise.  Aktingnya juga akting banget.  Hey, gue berhak ngomong ini karena gue udah nonton beberapa filmnya seperti An Affair to Remember, Breakfast at Tiffany's, The King and I, Gone with the wind, Roman Holiday, dll.  Mungkin gue salah nonton film?  Anyway, karena kekecewaan dan kebosanan yang gue alamin, gue jadi takut untuk nonton Casablanca (and I don't want to watch it, EVER) dan Citizen Kane.

Sebaliknya, gue suka banget film-film New Hollywood (bukan penggemar berat).  Gue merasa kalau film-film di New Hollywood mempunyai jalan cerita yang SANGAT sophisticated dan jauh dari 'sinetronik'.  Akting-akting pemainnya pun lebih natural dan believable.  Dan yang membuat gue lebih suka New Hollywood sebenarnya bukan sinematografinya atau settingnya lebih modern.  Lihat aja film-film New Hollywood dengan jalan cerita yang sederhana seperti Annie Hall, Manhattan, Kramer vs Kramer, dan The Graduate.

P.S : I personally think that Audrey Hepburn is an OVERRATED actress.  She's definitely not any better than Meryl Streep or Katharine Hepburn.  She's famous because she's a beauty.  Poor Katharine...

Okay, back to the topic.......

Joey Drayton (Katharine Houghton) dan kekasihnya akan mengunjungi keluarga Drayton untuk meminta restu pernikahan mereka.  Tapi, kekasih Joey bukanlah orang biasa.  John Prentice (Sidney Poitier) adalah pria kulit hitam.  Hal ini sangat absurd di tahun 60an.  Bahkan Matt (Spencer Tracy) dan Christina (Katharine Hepburn) tidak bisa menutupi rasa shock mereka atas keputusan putri mereka.

Dinamika cerita ini bagus banget.  Sama seperti Before Sunrise, jalan cerita film ini hanya berjalan dalam satu hari.  Semuanya mengalir dan penonton diajak untuk mengenal lebih baik keluarga Drayton in one day, and it's enough.  Gue jadi ingat tentang salah satu resensi film ini yang mengatakan bahwa film ini terlalu preachy.  Mungkin filmnya sedikit preachy, tapi gak se-preachy 9 Summers 10 Autumns ataupun Forrest Gump.  Film ini mengajak kita untuk melihat reaksi dari berita pernikahan antara kulit putih dan kulit hitam, yang keluarganya aja belum pernah bertemu sama sekali (yang gue yakin kalau ada sinetronnya pasti...).  Memang filmnya gak menjamin lo bakal ketawa ngakak, tapi gue tetap suka humornya yang...sopan dan ringan.

Gue suka banget semua aktor dan aktrisnya, termasuk Roy E. Gleen dan Beah Richards yang berperan sebagai orangtua John.....kecuali Katharine Houghton.  Menurut gue dia agak lebay di film ini.  Dan gue gak suka karakternya, I think Joey is a dumb, typical rich white girl.  Meskipun dia mencintai John dan orangtuanya, masa dia gak berpikir bahwa perkenalan pertama keluarga yang beda kulit, apalagi tidak saling mengenal, akan membawa impact yang sangat mengejutkan?  She's very annoying.

Obviously, gue lebih suka chemistry antara Spencer Tracy dan Katharine Hebprun.  Biasanya kalau nonton film, gue lebih suka lihat couple yang lebih tua daripada yang muda.  Tracy and Hepburn didn't go all (disgusting) lovey-dovey as a couple, they're mature and steady (ya iyalah!).  Tapi bukan berarti bahwa mereka adalah hypocrite white-rich couple yang dingin dan tidak saling mencintai.  They love each other, and most importantly, respect each other.  Itu terlihat dimana mereka mendiskusikan John dan Christine yang menasihati John dengan cara yang cukup halus.  Tidak hanya mereka mempunyai chemistry, akting mereka secara individual bagus banget.  Hepburn sebagai ibu yang emosional dan tabah, dan Tracy sebagai ayah yang penyayang dan keras kepala.  They just nailed it.

Sidney Poitier juga berhasil berperan sebagai Dr. John Prentice.  Karakternya cocok dengan latar belakangnya.  John adalah pria yang dewasa dan tenang, sangat berlawanan dengan si annoying Joey.  And thankfully, this movie has a scene where Poitier could show off his acting skill.   

Gue menanggap bahwa John dan Joey adalah pasangan yang too good to be true.  Masa pacaran mereka singkat banget, dan tiba-tiba mereka mau menikah.  Selama di film ini, gue melihat bahwa mereka gak menyelesaikan masalah seperti orangtua mereka.  Their relationship is too smooth.  Gue hanya menganggap bahwa mereka cuma couple yang desperate untuk menikah, karena William Rose tidak menunjukkan apakah pasangan ini bisa menghadapi konflik atau tidak.

Selain, itu, gue benci adegan terakhirnya.  Bagian itulah yang preach banget.  8,9/10
